Augusta 3-peat
The Corino Runners have been using the Savannah River Half three years in a row as an excuse to visit Brad while he lives in Augusta, GA. Since it’s such a small race (250 runners in the full, half and 10K) with a staggered start, parking your car and getting to the start line takes less than 5 minutes.
Shortly before our race started, Brad decided to go to the bathroom one last time. As luck would have it, the gun went off when he was making his way down & ditching his sweatshirt. We started the race at the back of the line, but I thought “no problem – it’s chip timed.”
We were humming along with relatively even splits until Mile 12 when we both slowed down. I kept checking my watch, though, because overall we were still good. Julianna was waiting at the final stretch and caught us racing to the finish line. Not my fastest race, but one of my favorites because I ran with my son. Then I checked the official time and couldn’t understand why it was so off from my Garmin. Five days later, when I checked the time for this Run Report, I realized that the race only uses Gun Time and not Chip Time. UGHHHH!!! Maybe it was only a matter of 30 seconds, but that can mean a lot in the end.
My watch had my overall pace at 8:53, not 9:05 like the race results. I wish I could say that that I’ve done a gazillion races and little things like that don’t bother me. But now I can sleep easier knowing that yes, I might be slowing down with age but I didn’t slow down as much as I thought.

RUNNIN’ OFF AT THE MOUTH
“There is something magical about running; after a certain distance, it transcends the body. Then a bit further, it transcends the mind. A bit further yet, and what you have before you, laid bare, is the soul.” – Kristin Armstrong
“In running or in life, I’ve found it really important to not shy away from races, workouts, exercises, or experiences I knew I am not great at or familiar with.” – Molly Huddle”

Does Gun Time vs. Chip Time Matter? (Google AI Overview)
Yes — it matters depending on whether you’re looking at official race rankings, personal records, or awards, because gun time and chip time measure different things and are used for different purposes.
Gun time (also called clock time or official time) starts when the race officially begins — the moment the starter’s gun, horn, or signal goes off — and ends when you cross the finish line Run The Day+1. It does not account for how long it took you to reach the starting line. This is why the first person to cross the finish line is declared the overall winner, even if they didn’t start at the very front of the pack

Chip time (also called net time) starts when you actually cross the starting line and ends when you cross the finish line Run The Day+1. It measures your actual running time and is unaffected by delays from crowded starts.
Why the difference matters
- Overall race winners: Most road races use gun time to determine the official winner, because it’s tied to who crosses the finish line first
arsenal-events.com+1.
- Personal records and performance tracking: Chip time is usually the number you want for your own PRs, comparing races, or tracking progress, since it reflects your true running duration

- Age-group awards: Many events use chip time for age-group rankings, because it’s fairer when runners start in different positions in a large field

- Large or wave-start races: Chip time is essential for fairness, as it removes the penalty for starting farther back in the pack
MYLAPS+1.
Example
If a race starts at 8:00 AM but you cross the start line at 8:03 AM and finish at 8:30 AM:
- Gun time: 30:00 (from 8:00 to 8:30)
- Chip time: 27:00 (from 8:03 to 8:30)
Run The Day+1
Bottom line: Gun time matters for official race rankings and awards, while chip time matters for your personal performance and fairer comparisons in large events. Always check the race rules to see which time is used for your category.

RUN REPORT – 10/17/26
The big conversation point around the several 20mi-plus runners was how we managed to plan completely different efforts. CtCloser did his with the Shawmont Avenue runners and added on by hoofing it home (having hitched a ride down to the fence via virtual-neighbor Betsy). Geoffrey did 6 miles beforehand (so he could get home and get on with his day). Bolt Cutter had 21 planned to the Art Museum and back up Forbidden Drive (sans Shawmont Avenue). Tall Dave had his long run planned around his usual 2mi from-home-and-back with a variation of a Shawmont Avenue effort. He may have lost an argument because he ended up doing that usual 2mi from-home-and-back with Bolt Cutter’s Art Museum loop for 23 total. He won the prize for longest SRC run, though.
Read Themz for those and other numerical deets.
Footnote: Back when Zen Yanni wrote, the narrative around the previous week’s efforts was a regular feature. “Run Report” was the name of the entire publication, then (iCandybyWangC.com).
