Runners are Special
Today I ran in a very small 5k for the Tioga County Homeless Initiative near Wellsboro, PA. In the meantime my partner John planned on hiking the nearby Mt. Tom Trail off of Pine Creek. He planned to be gone an hour so would return by the end of my race.
After the race John was nowhere to be seen. I decided to go on the trail to find him. There was a fairly steep incline, but I continued climbing in my running clothes. I called John’s name but got no response. Then I decided I might need help. I imagined he had fallen or twisted an ankle or worse.
I hiked back to the start where the runners were congregating. I spotted two men I had spoken to earlier, but both had young children they were holding. Instead I went to the three top young male runners and told them I needed help. I learned their names were Ben, Aaron, and Eric. I had also mentioned to my friend Robert that I couldn’t find John. He automatically went ahead to look.
All in our running clothes, we set off. Aaron, Eric and Robert were ahead while Ben kept me company as we hiked up the trail once again. We had only gone about a quarter of a mile through the woods, when Aaron and Eric called that they had found John. He was ok. It just happened the trail was longer and steeper than he had anticipated. I felt relief as I had been worried. I realized how spoiled I am, running this race at 83 and having John attempt the trail at 81.
I felt such gratitude to the guys. None had hesitated for a moment to hike a trail in search of John. They gladly helped me out, without a question. I felt very lucky to be in the company of caring runners.
Prof. Sandy

We told our guys to hold on for thirty minutes of agony for twelve months of glory.
— John McDonnell, coach of Arkansas, which won the 1993 NCAA cross-country title
We never try to put ceilings on anyone. Years ago certain records were unattainable, but it happens. In any given situation in any given time, anything can happen.
— Sue Humphrey, Head Women’s Track and Field coach
Bill Rodgers probably has more physical talent than anyone I’ve ever met, but his relaxed attitude under pressure is what distinguishes him.
— Tom Fleming, two-time winner of the NYC Marathon
