Nothing New & Everything New on Race Day – by KayCee

I’ve written ad nauseum about being sidelined from running for 4 months due to a combination of knee issues [ShawmontRunningClub.com]. I was so optimistic that I’d be able to run in some capacity that before I was even cleared by the doctor I signed up for Broad Street. To make it a family affair, I signed up my son Brad, my daughter Julianna & her boyfriend John, and my nephew Andrew. The latter 2 had never run Broad Street before and were excited to see what the hype was about.

The 3 boys knew they all had the same green Lululemon shirt and decided to all wear them on race day. They gamely smiled for a picture, looking like triplets. Brad then realized it was colder than he expected, so he grabbed his dad’s XL long sleeved cotton shirt to wear as a throwaway at the starting line.

You know the advice about wearing new gear or clothes on race day? Or wearing complicated layers? Check and check for Brad. The gun went off with him still in the oversized shirt. At mile 3, when he started to heat up, he realized that he’d probably be cold at the finish line and that he might need the long sleeves. He somehow managed to tie the shirt around his neck and continue running another 7 miles at a 6:45 pace, all while taking pictures with his iPhone.

Meanwhile, I had put so much thought into what I’d wear (nothing new, nothing fussy), and wouldn’t dream of pulling out my phone for fear of dropping it. For my next race, I’m tempted to run in my old college hoodie while eating a sandwich. Maybe it will bring me good luck and a sub-7 pace.

Kudos to Brad (1:07:44), Julianna (1:25:30), John (1:03:11) and Andrew (1:00:38) for all getting PRs at Broad Street [Congrats-a-Mundo to All]. I’m already looking forward to next year’s 10 mile run to the Navy Yard.
