RUMINATIONS
Falling for Fall?? – by KayCee
Now that autumn is upon us, I am reminded of the many sayings that use the word “fall.” Spring ahead, fall back. Falling in love. Fall away. Falling behind. Falling while running.
Wait a second, what was that last one?? Is fall the season and reason for so many runners taking a tumble lately? My daughter JulCee fell on Ridge, 12 miles into her Shawmont loop, at the end of August. Two weeks later, I fell going up Shawmont. That same day, I heard that Caiter had fallen on the bridge along Lincoln Drive.
In one of CtCloser’s recent essays, he said that Lynette had fallen TWICE on a recent Shawmont. A few weeks ago, JulCee’s JH fell off his bike in Midtown Manhattan and broke his hand. Last week, Dutch, Diane L. and I were at mile 7.9 of our 8 miler when Diane tripped and fell. The very next day, I was running with Christine and she went down on a sidewalk in North Wales.
The Blue Belles intimated that I was the common link to some of the falls, but Quietman Tom fessed up to falling on a Tuesday run, leaving me in the clear.
I’m not sure what has caused these spills, but when I finished my run this morning still standing, I was very grateful! Whether it was the recent full moon, rocks hiding under leaves, or just poor luck, consider this a PSA to watch where your feet are landing!

P.S. Coincidence??? … All that Jaz took a spill on the path Saturday!

Fat-Adaptation vs Carb-Loading – The Great Debate [Rerun from 9/6/25]
The Two Fueling Philosophies
- The Carb-Centric Philosophy: This model is built on the belief that a continuous supply of carbohydrates is necessary for all runs…
- The Fat-Adapted Philosophy: This approach is a training strategy. By performing certain runs in a low-carb or fasted state, you force your body to become more efficient at utilizing its nearly limitless fat reserves…
Strategic Fueling for Different Types of Runs
- Easy/Recovery Runs: It is not necessary to eat before every single workout, especially for runs lasting an hour or less…
- Long Runs: While a fat-adapted runner can go further on fat alone, a strategic amount of carbohydrate intake is still recommended during long runs…
- High-Intensity Workouts (Tempo runs, Intervals): These are the workouts where carbohydrates are critical…
Race Day and the Myth of Sparing Glycogen
Potential Dangers and Final Takeaway
…The ultimate advice is that fat-adaptation is a valuable tool, but it’s not for everyone…
