A Different Opinion on Ruminating
[2 MIN READ] “Ruminations” is one feature of Shawmont Running Club’s Weekly Run Report. If your intersection with the Report comes from outside of Facebook (where you can read all of the features since its inception, long before I started contributing), then you wouldn’t know what the various features are. Some are about and are geared more for the members of the club; so non-fans, much less non-runners, might not be interested much.
For non-member runners, Whoz Doin What is interesting for the names of different races and the distances that are out there. It’s also downright awe-dropping and jaw-inspiring to see how many races any given (or specific) individual can seriously consider in a calendar year. For pretty much everyone, Runnin’ Off at the Mouth is just a barrel of fits and giggles, even if running is the sole subject matter.
To get back to this particular Report feature, Ruminations, what’s not to understand about the phenomenon of getting into a pacing groove and getting lost in thought? Even the most agony-riddled runner, consumed by the obsession of the nonce to quit, has thoughts that would make good literary fodder. They just have to get to the literizing. (That was another appeal for more contributors and contributions. There are other meaningful people in the world, even when that world is mine. And, yes, literizing is a made up word.) For me, becoming a contributor was natural given all the ruminating I do, even outside of running.
Imagine my shock and dismay when I saw this New York Times article title, How to Stop Ruminating, because my immediate response was to say to myself, ‘Self, why would anyone want to do that?!’ But apparently there are other ways to define words. And ruminate is one of them. Feel free to read the article (assuming you can get past the firewall), but simply, some people can get wrapped up endlessly in unproductive thought patterns. There you go. All my Ruminations are absolutely productive. Click on Ruminations by CtCloser in Fine Print to verify for yourself.

I much prefer racing against men than against the clock. It is much more fun.
