Teddio

Census taker

[2 MIN READ]

The best evidence, according to the geological record, is that SRC started circa 1989. Teddio figures he started running Wissahickon Creek’s Forbidden Drive in the early 80’s. He might have been in diapers at the time. No archaeological research has been done for that epoch.

Neither does anyone interviewed actually remember the precise details of how he, Waterbottle Dave, and Zen Yanni started running together. What is known is that Teddio was running his first Broad Street Run when he recognized ZY: “Hey, Forbidden Drive!” The rest of the details are misty, water-colored memories.

In the 20-teens, Teddio assumed the role of census taker after ZY’s “retirement.” The evidence from the weekly newsletters is that he takes his responsibilities seriously: He’s at the trail head even in the rare instance when no one shows. It’s happened!

A couple of other published details about his personality have come from Ruminations of recent years. Don’t get him going about heights. And he’s not above a kvetch.

Beginning late 2023, he also began rounding out the ZY Weekly Newsletter with his contributions to the Elsewhere in the News column.

As far as his running, he continues to be a fixture on Forbidden Drive many days of the week, including Saturdays with the club.

Trail Tag

The details of how Teddio got his nickname are also lost to the mists of memory, but it’s not a stretch to imagine it coming from the affectionate, two-fold augmentation of Ted (itself the diminution of the name only his mother ever calls him) to Teddy, and that to its final form, perhaps with a nod to “tally-ho.” To the degree that last hypothesis is true, perhaps it’s surprising that it never became his call to arms (legs?) for each Saturday’s run effort.
