RUMINATIONS

By KayCee

My first distance race was a 10 miler. Specifically, it was the 10 for Texas in The Woodlands and I ran it with my brother and sister. We talked for the entire race and crossed the finish line together. I was so ecstatic when it was over because I was happy with my time and even happier that I had finished with Eric & Margo. Despite all the races I have run since 2008, that one is still my favorite because I ran it with my family.

Flash forward 15 years and Margo and I are still running. Since she lives near Houston, we don’t get to run together that often. Each summer, though, she comes up to the Adirondacks where my family has had a house since the 1950’s. It sits on a beautiful lake, and the road around the lake is 4 miles.

It has become a tradition to run around the lake each time I am there, and I am always seeking ways to add on to increase my mileage. In July, I spent a week at the lake with Margo & her kids and I mentioned to them that my son Brad & I had signed up to run a half marathon in Georgia in October. The next day, my nephew went out and ran 10 miles (5 miles more than his usual) and when he returned from the run, he also signed up for the race.  Not to miss out on things, my daughter Julianna signed up for the 10K.

Although the race is still a few months away, I am looking forward to running with the next generation of runners. It’s a beautiful thing when you can share your passion with your family.
