“Same Same, But Different”1: Runners Run – by OKhen
We all know, whether old or young, slow or fast: runners run.2
That said sometimes, it’s possible we get into a: runner’s rut. Maybe we run the same races, wear the same shoes, eat the same food(s), do the same things on the same days, etc. Call it: Groundhog Day (1993) Trailer #1 | Movieclips Classic Trailers.
Some think keeping things the same allows us to concentrate on the things we can control. By doing this we may be better prepared to manage the things we can’t control.
On the other hand, maybe doing something different will bring freshness to our soles and soul. I have been a runner since 2010. Up until this year, my shortest race was one mile on the Limerick Airport runway and I had never competed on a track.
This summer, in Puerto Rico, I had the opportunity to participate in the “Juegos De Puerto Rico Adultos Mayores” (Puerto Rico Games for Seniors). For my first year, I did not consider competing in field events (maybe next year?). Still, I had options to race distances from 100 to 5,000 meters. I decided to run the 800 and 400 meters.
About two weeks later, on the same track, the Campeonato Nacional Master (Master National Championship) was held. This time I raced the 800, 400, and 200 meters.
This past weekend I decided to run the same Aguas Termales Coamo 5K road race that I did last year. The https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/5kaguastermalescoamo?locale=es_LA. It is an awesome race that ends at natural thermal pools. Come and check it out!
It was the same course as last year, I wore the same socks and shoes, on race day I ate the same foods (including, my race day staple, just like Conner Mantz, Pop-Tarts®3). However, something different: I forgot, just prior to the start of the race, to stuff Craisins® (the poor man’s version of GU) in my cheeks. Lo and behold I ran more than 1 minute faster than last year! Now I am wondering if it was the racing on the track or the lack of Craisins® or ????. What made this year’s race: “Same same, but different?”

FINE PRINT 1“Same same, but different” is an expression attributed to Thailand. 2Even if we are recovering from sickness, injury or some other life event we are, at the very least, thinking to, training to, or preparing to run (again)! 3I actually eat Aldi’s Millville® Toaster Tarts Frosted Brown Sugar & Cinnamon. ¶Text by Kenneth Olsho (Ólshó), CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. ¶Cross-published: Facebook Shawmont Running Club (ZY Weekly Newsletter 7/13/24), Shawmont Running Club website.

RUNNIN’ OFF AT THE MOUTH
“The challenge and energy running requires may be a selfish one, but it actually motivates me to be stronger in my relationships.” –Joan Benoit Samuelson
“I love buying running shoes. I don’t mean that I just enjoy the process of trying on new shoes. I mean I love buying running shoes.” –John Bingham
“The body does not want you to do this. As you run it tells you to stop but the mind must be strong. You always go too far for your body. You must handle the pain with strategy. It is not age, it is not diet. It is the will to succeed.” –Jacqueline Gareau
