RUMINATIONS
By Kaycee
When I started doing local races a million years ago, I would line up at the start with RC. She was the only runner I knew that loved races, and truth be told, she was also the only person I knew that loved to run as much as I did.
Our husbands would get us to the starting line of the Rock & Roll races in Philly, and would cheer us on at the start and the end. It seemed that all the other runners knew each other, and I wondered what I had to do to broaden my circle of runner friends.
Somewhere along the line we found Shawmont (primarily thanks to Leigh before she moved out west), and local races were never the same after that. Each time we would go to a race, we were bound to run into someone we knew either from Valley Green or AARC. Races became a lot more fun, because we felt like we had made finally found a space in the running community.
Now when LM, CL, KW, RL, DL and I drive to Philly, we invariably run into people we know. The long, boring stretches on MLK are much more fun when we see runners we know either around us or coming towards us.
The last race LM, DL and I did in Philly was the PDR in September of 2023. We made our usual stop at the Sheraton to use the bathroom, and ran into plenty of familiar faces. It made my pre-race jitters disappear, and the day was so much better because of the friendly runners we have met along the way.
