Celebrating the Finish Lines – by KayCee
Hubby and I recently returned from a 5-day ski trip to Park City, Utah. We hastily pulled this trip together in mid-January, because I wanted to celebrate my February birthday somewhere other than Blue Bell. Since we both love skiing, it was an easy choice to make.
Someone had asked me if we were good skiers. We can put your boots on without swearing – does that make us good? And we have our own ski pants – does that count?
We stuck to easier blues and long rolling greens. Hubby would ski past me at his top speed and wait for me further down. I was happy to just be out there, doing my wide and slow S turns using the whole mountain and smiling under my gaiter. Riding up on the chair lift with strangers, we had no idea if they were headed to the steep and deep black bowls, or to the clearly marked green run named “Easier Way.” And it didn’t matter – everyone was friendly and enjoying the fresh Utah powder.

I did a lot of thinking about running while I was skiing, and it’s very hard to compare the two sports. In my head, I was sure I looked like Mikaela Shiffrin bombing down the mountain. And when I run, I just know I have Shalane Flanagan’s effortless style. Maybe being good at something is really all in your head. Whether or not you cross the finish line with a world record time, you still finished, and that is something worth celebrating.
