Working Toward Philadelphia Marathon, 2025’11’16’U – by CtCloser

Every marathon training cycle I’ve gone through lately has seemed to bring something unprecedented. With Philadelphia coming up 11’16’U (Sunday), this one has me needing to work especially hard on pace and bringing weekly mileage in line. Since the last marathon, Delaware Running Festival Marathon (04’06’U), I’ve lost one routine weekly run. This took my 25-30 miles/week maintenance mileage, using 3 weekly runs, down to 18 miles or so with 2 weekly runs. My 9½ min/min maintenance has moved to around 10. Everyone’s effort changes outside of race training, but those numbers are awfully low for me.

With a 3:50 Boston qualifier in my aspirations, I know what I need to work on and I have a feel for how I’m going to get there. The key is surrounding myself with like-minded runners. With AARC running weekly track workouts every Thursday during the summer months into fall, I have one place there that I can go. Instead of that one, though, for various reasons I decided to start Tuesday track workouts at Cheltenham Township’s Cedarbrook Middle School. It’s closer to me and is particularly reachable by other Growlers from Jenkintown Running Company’s native-born running club, Growlers Group Run.

Btw, a bunch of those Growlers have started enjoying the benefits of SRC’s consistency, mileage, and standard routes. Read more about some of them: “Reluctant Introduction” (Ruminations. iCandybyWangC.com)

The question is why I’ve only seen the tiniest change in my pacing after the 4 weeks I’ve been doing those workouts. The plans are copped from Too Hot Tom—who designs AARC’s every week—so I know they’re quality plans with good targets and Philadelphia in mind. I do have to be honest with myself; 30 miles/week isn’t a lot of miles for marathon training: That’s slowly increasing along with the speed work.

I may never have been in this precise situation, but things are working in my favor. I’ve now done 26 marathons, so I’ve gone through the training cycle 26 times. A 3-month marathon training cycle has just begun that I began a month early. I have a good training-support team around me. With all that in place, it’s time to trust the process. Improvements will come at their own pace.
