Run Report: Things I Heard on Broad Street – by KayCee
In past years when I have done the Broad Street run, I have been surrounded by friends and we agree to run together until someone drops off or pulls ahead. This year was different – I lined up with my daughter, her friend, Jamie and Quietman Tom. My goal was to stay with Jamie as long as I could, which turned out to be about half a mile. My daughter fell behind, and at mile 4 it was just me, my thoughts, and 30,000+ other runners.
I left my AirPods behind so I could soak in the surroundings and enjoy the scenery. Every now and then I’d catch snippets of conversation, like this one around Mile 5…. “Chad is meeting up with Lisa tonight.” “Really? I don’t see how they can kiss each other with those big noses.” For a few miles, I was imagining just what Chad and Lisa and their big noses look like.
With Broad Street approaching, there was a guy holding Chips Ahoy cookies and offering them to the runners. I do love cookies, but didn’t think I’d be able to chew and run at the same time. Further down the road was someone with a bottle of Fireball, giving out free shots to any takers. (I wasn’t one of them.)
With the home stretch in sight, I was near a very fit woman who seemed to be coaching another woman. “Try to work your glutes. Really work them. Now engage your core. Keep your shoulders back and down. And tilt your pelvis if you can.” I was now 9.75 miles into my run and my brain was fried. I know the advice wasn’t for me, but I don’t think I could have worked my glutes any harder, and I couldn’t even fathom how to tilt my pelvis and still stay upright and moving forward.
JRC has been the local draw for its own reasons, including proximity and 5K weekly distances; but when it comes to BSR-, half-marathon-, and marathon-training mileage, SRC is its own destination. So, welcome to A.A.Ron, Adelaide, Caiter, CJ3, Sylvia, Train Dave, and Yaz. Waiting on the wings with their own Philly Marathon coming up this fall are Lynette and Thaddeus. The mileage (in addition to the setting and the buddies) really gets into your bones.

RUNNIN’ OFF AT THE MOUTH
“My doctor told me that running could add years to my life. I think he was right. I feel ten years older already.” –Milton Berle (Rerun from 10/26/24)
“No doubt a brain and some shoes are essential for marathon success. Although if it comes down to a choice, pick the shoes. More people finish marathons with no brains than with no shoes.” –Don Kardong (Rerun from 10/12/24)
“1% of the population will run a marathon in their lifetime. It’s their obligation to talk about it so the other 99% know what they’re missing.” –Unknown
