Run Report: A Novel / Novice Approach to Training – by KayCee

A few months ago, my daughter told me she had signed up for the Brooklyn Half Marathon. This would be her first 13.1 miler, and longest distance run since her 2016 Broad Street race. Immediately I went into full on Mom / Run Coach mode. I offered to design a plan for her, buy her new running shoes, and even run the race with her. Oddly, she turned down all my offers except for the new Hokas, and seemed horrified that I would sign up for the race.

She had joined a boxing gym and was going to train for the race with one of the coaches, who had also never run a half before. They were okay with what they were doing, despite my frequent (okay, non-stop) encouragement that they needed to run more than one day a week.

As race day approached, I was probably more nervous than she was. I know a lot of runners, and none of them run 1 day a week leading up to a big race. However, none of the runners I know are 26 and using HIIT boxing workouts several times a week as the brunt of their training.

She took my advice on what to wear and how to fuel, and hubby and I were proudly cheering her on as she conquered the hills and winds of Brooklyn 2 weeks ago. When she crossed the finish line in 1:58:09, I realized that I had a lot to learn about her approach.

As tough as it was to let her do her own thing for training, it was just as rewarding to see her proudly wear her medal and a big smile for her accomplishment. Last week she ran Broad Street, and then claimed that she was “happy to be in the off season.” Until the next race catches her attention…
