All City 20 Miler – by Elvis

20 miles anyone? When I first heard about this organized fun run, I thought to myself, “Who in their right mind would run 20 miles for fun?” Fast forward a year, and I am running this 20 miler with friends in support of one of our own, JulCee, who is running the Philly Marathon in three weeks: her first! Running is a funny thing sometimes. It’s a love-hate thing sometimes. It’s an I-can’t-believe-I-just-did-that thing sometimes… Can I tell you? I had THE best time!

I highly recommend this event to anyone looking to run a long distance without the pressure of a timed race. The atmosphere captured the excitement of a real race, with enthusiastic runners, helpful volunteers, and well-placed water stops throughout the course. We began in the theater parking lot in Manayunk, headed east along the drives, crossed over the Falls Bridge, and then followed the MLK trail path to Lloyd Hall before looping back up Kelly Drive. Although I’ve run this route many times, experiencing the MLK trail path for the first time was truly memorable—it was so picturesque. As the city slowly awakened and the sun rose above the skyline, there was a peacefulness before the rush of daily life began. During the first mile or so, my mind kept wandering about how I would finish this distance. Even with mental preparation, taking on double digits always brings a flood of second guessing, prayer, and soul searching.

My strategy was to break the run into 5-mile segments. Once I completed each segment, I would restart fresh. After the drives at the 10-mile mark, we are back where we started. Now the fun began, running on the beloved Manayunk towpath and SRT. Once we arrived at the bottom of Shawmont Ave, we fueled at the water stop, which was ironically located right where we normally stop to fuel, but instead of climbing that 1-mile monster mountain, we headed west on the SRT with only one small hill and then a nice flat run for 2 blissful miles. At the turnaround point, we did a little happy dance…lol. “5 miles is all that we have left to go,” I blurted out to anyone who would listen. We headed back a bit stiff, until slowly our engines started to warm up and kick back into gear. The last 5 miles were enjoyable, cheering others on as I passed by, and I really enjoyed the tow path in reverse, seeing things that I never noticed before. Once finished, there was some after-run recovery food & drink. Smart water in a can, yes, please! Stale/hard Philly pretzel never tasted better! Perfectly ripened banana, absolutely!

Did I mention that this event was free?  I couldn’t believe it!  It was a well-organized event and a collaboration of some great organizations: Philadelphia runner, Students Run Philly Style, Team Philly Race Training, and AACR Philadelphia Marathon. I saw a lot of Students Run Philly Style in blue T-shirts and decided to check out their website to learn more. Their Mission Statement: “Students Run Philly Style transforms students’ lives through mentorship over miles of long-distance running and achievement. We pair volunteer running Leaders with teams of students to inspire them to push themselves further than they ever imagined. Their goal: the completion of a 10-mile run, a half or full marathon.” I was cheering them on along the way, not knowing anything about them, but come race day, I will be on the lookout for the blue t-shirts and offering encouragement with a big smile!

Happy Running!
