Lessons from a Sprained Ankle – by CtCloser
All the phone gazing I do that SRC-ers tell me to stop caught up to me. What with the starting and pausing of MapMyRun or the logging of a thought or detail, club runners are worried about me injuring myself. “Ah, I’ll be fine,” I say dismissively. Until I’m not. Which happened on a solo Shawmont Manor 16 late August when I was looking at something and rolled my left ankle off the pavement (ShawmontRunningClub.com). My weak left ankle. The one I sprain every year or so. It was bad, but not super bad. Super bad came running down the cobblestone of Port Royal Ave. When I sprained it again. That was bad.
As Jimmy Dee has quipped to me about recovering from his injuries so well: Practice makes perfect. All that spraining of ankle has taught me that it is possible to run on one. (I still had to get back to Zen Yanni’s bench at the start, 5½ miles away.) Thanks to all the Strava followers who offered sympathy, encouragement, and advice. That itself made the steps to recovery more bearable.

Josh, whom I met at Black Men Run Philadelphia one Wednesday night in May, offered the cautious “Don’t rush it” that I knew I could ignore; at least relative to the way I often hear people talk about sprained ankles. Not that I don’t care what he thinks, it’s just that practice makes perfect.
I subscribe to the “whisper, talk, yell” pain-assessment school of recovery that my physical therapist taught me when I was recovering from Achilles tendinopathy. Whisper is doing functional recovery with pain at a minimum is fine. Talking is problematic pain. Reaching that then backing off allows an athlete to gauge the progress of recovery. Yelling is risking escalation of injury. No. Just, no.
I elevated my ankle and used my well-worn brace for a couple of days. With pain at a whisper, I was able to do a speed workout 3 days post injury. The talking that started as I was finishing the workout confirmed I had reached a limit but proved that I also didn’t need to stop completely. So I’m well on my way to a complete recovery with little interference to my training. Now about avoiding injury in the first place…
