My Blood Says What?? – by KayCee

As runners, I think most of us assume that given the weekly mileage we put in, we should be finely tuned machines.  Storming up (okay, even walking up!) Shawmont isn’t easy, so we must be in pretty good shape to do it each weekend.

But then we get our blood work results and find out that our liver enzymes are so high the doctor thinks we were on a bender the night before.  Or our A1C is in the pre-diabetic range, and there is a self-imposed moratorium on all things sweet or chocolate.  Don’t even tell me that our cholesterol is high and we need a statin!

I was recently comparing blood work with Quietman Tom, CtCloser, and BBBetsy.  There was a certain comfort that all of us had received surprising news regarding our labs, leading me to do a little digging on Dr. Google.

I found that the Cleveland Clinic recommends not engaging in intense physical activity due to the negative effect it can have on your LDL. Regarding those high liver enzymes? Runners may experience elevated ALT and AST after intense physical activity, with the levels returning to baseline in a few days as the body recovers. I couldn’t find anything to support the idea that running increases your A1C, but there is enough data out there that says it can be in the pre-diabetic range without ever developing into diabetes.  Anemia can contribute to a higher A1C, and it’s very common for runners to have an iron deficiency.

On that recent run, we all agreed that we had never been told beforehand to stop running a few days before bloodwork. Now we know and will act accordingly before our next labs are drawn. And one of us might even have some dark chocolate, safe in the knowledge that it can potentially reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes!
