RUMINATIONS

Run Report: 6/14/25 – by CtCloser

Twenty-one recorded runners took off from the horse stables at the top of Forbidden Dr with one newbie in tow, Lynette. She’ll get to Shawmont Avenue eventually—what with her sights on a first marathon with Philadelphia in November—but that run was to be an 8-miler that All That Jaz was happy to do with her.

Although she wasn’t a newbie, JulCee (daughter of KayCee, don’t you know) was visiting from NYCee and herself priming for a first marathon with that same city’s in October. That SRC run was her first Shawmont Avenue, though. Still coasting off her Broad Street Run conditioning, she ascended with little trouble.

At Roxy service station, when we reached the top, 10 of us congregated and congratulated ourselves. Myself prepping for Philly in the fall, I was happy to anticipate an extra 2 miles with Quietman Tom and Tall Dave. It’s been many a month since they were in the Shawmont Manor groove and it was a precious experience to be able to go off with them.

More precious than that, though, was the experience of heading back toward Port Royal Road and hearing JulCee comment with shock in her voice, “We’re going back down?!”

Soon enough, marathon trainers. Soon enough.

RUNNIN’ OFF AT THE MOUTH

“If we had a drug that did what exercise did, it would be the biggest revolution ever and would be promoted all over the world. And all you have to do is go out for a run.” –Greg Wells, Ph.D.

“Running is kind of like coffee. The first time you drink it you might not like it. It’s bitter and leaves a bad taste in your mouth but you kind of like the way it makes you feel. However, after a few times, it starts to taste better and then all of a sudden you’re hooked and it’s the new best part of waking up.” –Amy Hastings Cragg, U.S. Olympic marathoner

“It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember. What you remember is the process — what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands — those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish twelfth or you’re an Olympic Champion.” –Silken Laumann, Canadian Olympian
