Run Report: Love Run Half Marathon – by KayCee

A few weeks ago, I had planned to do the Love Run with friend X.  At the expo on Friday afternoon, I was getting excited about the warm weather that was forecasted, and the idea of running in the city again. Plus, non-runner college friend S was going to be at the race to cheer on her 23-year-old daughter.

On Saturday morning, X texted me that she couldn’t run the race.  I quickly worked out my options… another friend offered to drive to Philly with me, but I didn’t feel right asking her to get up so early for a race she wasn’t going to do. Since I have an aversion to driving on the Schuylkill anyway, I decided I could run my own half marathon right from my house since I was trained for the distance.

The weather forecasters had it wrong, and Sunday / Race Day was NOT a warm morning.  I pulled on my cold weather clothes, said goodbye to my hubby & puppy, and set out to run 13.1 miles on my own.  I ran for the sheer joy of running where I’d starting running 15 years ago on roads I know like the back of my hand.

S texted me that her daughter finished in 1:55. I looked at my watch, saw my time and distance, and sprinted to the virtual finish line so I that I also did a 1:55.  There’s no way I was going to be beat by a 23-year-old! I may have real race and Schuylkill Expressway anxiety, but at heart I’m still competitive.  My lack of course planning resulted in a 2-mile run back home.  It was odd to finish solo, with no cheering crowds, photographers and Philly skyline.  But I beat my goal time of 2:00 and my dog and husband were happy to see me when I got home.

Not quite the Love Run, but more like the Kristy Loves to Run.

RUNNIN’ OFF AT THE MOUTH

“Marathon runners with bad shoes suffer the agony of de feet.” –Unknown

“Never mess with a woman who runs 26.2 miles for fun.” –Unknown

“No doubt a brain and some shoes are essential for marathon success. Although if it comes down to a choice, pick the shoes. More people finish marathons with no brains than with no shoes.” –Don Kardong
