The Half-Fast Club* – by OKhen and BrODhavid
* Be careful with your pronunciation!
My older, actuarial, and charitable brother David has been an avid runner since high school. Over the years, he’s accomplished some impressive feats, including completing over 150 marathons. In his prime, he was fast enough to qualify for and run the Boston Marathon. However, as time has passed, his pace has naturally slowed. To keep running fun and lighthearted, he founded a unique club, which he describes below:
THE HALF-FAST CLUB
Requirements for Membership:
To qualify for the Half-Fast Club, you must meet either of the following criteria:
- Complete a race of any distance where your time is at least twice as long as your personal best for that distance.
- Complete a race of any distance where your time matches or exceeds your personal best for double that distance.
For example:
- If your marathon personal best is 3:00:00, you qualify if you run a marathon in 6:00:00 or more or a half-marathon in 3:00:00 or more.
Membership Details:
Membership is automatic upon meeting one of the qualifying criteria. However, if you’d like to withdraw from the club—whether you’re embarrassed, tired of being the butt of jokes, or for any other reason—you can “buy” your way out with a charitable contribution. The contribution is calculated at $1.00 per mile of your qualifying race.
For example:
- If your qualifying race was a marathon in 6 hours, you would contribute $26.22.
- If it was a half-marathon in 3 hours, your contribution would be $13.11.
