RUMINATIONS
By KayCee
On September 27th, 2024, the city of Augusta, Georgia was significantly impacted by Hurricane Helene. Although the damage was nowhere near the devastation of Asheville, NC, the Augustans were without power and water for a week. Enormous trees were toppled, roofs were ripped off, and stores were looted leaving little food for the community. Damages were expected to exceed $417 million.
In addition to the destruction they were dealing with, the Augusta Running Club was expected to put on a race just 2 weeks later – on a greenbelt that was now covered in massive trees and branches. They pulled off a heroic effort of clearing the course with the help of volunteers, chainsaws, rakes & trimmers. In addition to the impacted greenway, the race was to start at the ball park the first responders were using as a staging area.
We didn’t know until 6 days before the race if it would even be held, but they wound up altering the course to be 1 loop for the 10K, 2 loops for the half, and a mind-numbing 4 loops for the marathon.
God must have been smiling on the race committee because the day of the race was picture perfect. The emergency team had left and there was no apparent evidence of Helene other than trees down on the side of the path. Because of the looped course (beginning from N. Augusta, SC), I was able to see my son & nephew twice, and my daughter once. Seeing them made me smile and brought a little tug on my heart. When Brad was called to the podium as (first finisher) with my nephew right behind with second, to say it was a Proud Mom moment is a gross understatement. To top it off, Julianna placed in her AG for the 10K. Yes, it was a very small race, but it didn’t matter. We ran that day as hard as if there were 17,000 runners instead of 176.
Augusta will be recovering from Helene for a while, but on that Saturday a few weeks ago, the running community came together and did what we do best – support each other with our passion for running.
