RUMINATIONS
By KayCee
CtCloser recently ruminated that it “sucks to grow old.” Despite my best efforts to slow the hands of time, I agree with him. I should add that with age comes wisdom and the prerequisite for every comeback is a setback.
In late August, I spent a week at our family lake house with my sister’s family, and every morning we would meet at 7:30 for “Star Lake Run Club.” However, after running too many consecutive days on very cambered roads, my knee began to scream. What followed were some dismal runs and painful runs, runs cut short, and a one-week hiatus from running all together.
This same thing happened to me 2 years ago and fortunately I knew how to approach the rehab this time. I implemented a combination of ART, PT (my own version), acupuncture, RICE, stretching, making deals with God, and foam rolling… things that I probably wouldn’t have tried in my younger days.
Last weekend when I joined the Shawmont crew, it was crushing to turn back at the inn while everyone else went forward towards Manayunk. On the upside, I had Kelee to keep me company and we wound up running 6 miles and walking for one. Progress, for sure!
I’m fortunate that IT Band Syndrome doesn’t require surgery, and it won’t sideline me as long as plantar fasciitis or a stress fracture would. Maybe my knee issue was God’s way of humbling me, making sure I don’t get too cocky, and forcing me to accept that, yes, I AM aging. And, yes, it does suck. But at least I have the experience to listen to my body & know this won’t last forever. Before you know it, I’ll be doing another Shawmont.
