RUMINATIONS

By KayCee

When I started running in 2009, it was for many reasons. At the time, my kids were 11 years old and puberty was beginning to kick in with a vengeance.  I would often run to escape the noise of 2 kids fighting with each other or with me. Running gave me time to think about what I was doing wrong as a parent, if I was really the worst parent on the planet, and how we could survive without killing each other.

A few years later, I started running with the Shawmont group, and the members became my sounding board for the trials & tribulations of twins touring colleges, applying to college, college acceptances, studying abroad, and finally graduating.

I looked forward to the Saturday runs, comparing stories with other parents about our kids’ plans, achievements, and disappointments. Since I love to talk when I run, at some point every Shawmont runner listened to me lament about what was going on with my son and daughter. They probably got bored hearing me babble about my daughter living at home longer than we had expected. And they learned more about dental school, dentures, & prosthodontics residencies than they thought was necessary.

Now that they are 26, they are finally living on their own.  I must not have been the worst parent after all, because we all survived. It’s a good thing I still have the Saturday Shawmont crew to talk to, because after launching 2 kids into the real world, it’s time to focus on other things and other people.
