RUMINATIONS

Does Running Make You Smarter? by Dutch

Let’s ruminate a bit… A Story inspired by the Runner (Hare) and the Turtle (Tortoise). Most of us know the story of The Hare & the Tortoise, along with the infamous quotes “Slow & steady wins the race.” or “The race is not always to the swift.”  Recently, our Shawmonter Kristy Corino (AKA Kaycee) was running and came upon a turtle laying her eggs. She took a moment to capture this on camera and decided to share it with her running besties. We were all amazed at this miraculous event. I, not realizing that land turtles lay eggs (I know I must have missed that school lesson), I quickly sought out Google and was instantly educated on how a mama turtle will dig a hole, lay her eggs, cover them up, and then leave to never return. That is certainly one way of parenting…lol. Maybe another subject to ruminate about?

I am amazed at what I learn while running with friends, along with pre-and-post-run research. When preparing for a long run I make sure to get my morning routine done—usually a hydration drink 45 minutes to an hour before starting—water for the run, and a post-run snack. But as of late I also prepare talking points making sure I have the proper facts available should I be asked. For example: If I want to talk about a new television series, I make sure I know the title, which network it’s on, and the main character names, along with their real names and the summary of the storyline. If it is an article, I make sure to have the basic facts in bullet format and definitions for any hard-to-pronounce words. As you can imagine, I have become quite the student.

There are many articles written about how running is good for your health, its ability to burn a ton of calories, relieve stress, be good for your psyche (It’s my therapy), improve memory, and much more. But I wonder if anyone ever thought about it as an educational activity. In the case of the turtle, according to Wikipedia, “There are 360 living and recently extinct species, including land-dwelling, freshwater, and sea turtles. They breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater. Although the mother turtles leave their eggs and soon-to-be hatchlings to fend for themselves, they have been known to guard the nesting area for a few days or weeks.” From time to time, if I see a box turtle while running from here on, I won’t be able to help but wonder if it just laid some eggs or is just crossing the path.

The Nuances of Runner Nutrition: One Size Does Not Fit All

…This article highlights the confusion stemming from nutrition advice that does not always apply to the needs of athletes. One size does not fit all!

  • I’ve stopped eating (fattening) potato, pasta & starchy carbs with dinner. I eat a pile of veggies, instead.
    • To start, starchy carbs are not inherently fattening…
  • I enjoy recovering from my workouts with a 40-gram-protein shake.
    • …You actually want three times more carbs than protein…
  • I don’t drink orange juice anymore. Too much sugar…
  • I use electrolyte tablets after long workouts…
  • I crave sugar. I’m trying to not eat it…
  • I try to not snack in the afternoon…
  • I avoid peanut butter. Too fattening…
  • I love XXX but I’ve stopped eating it because I end up eating too much of it…
