RUMINATIONS
By Jimmy D
I was out for a typical morning run last week and realized that the date was June 6. My focus turned away from monitoring my race pace to that of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. As a baby boomer, my life was significantly impacted by World War 2 veterans. They were the fathers who coached us in little league baseball, Pop Warner football and CYO basketball. They were civic leaders, blue-and-white-collar workers and tradesmen. They were the ones who made sure that we headed home when the streetlights came on. They didn’t hesitate to admonish us for bad behavior even if we weren’t their kid but were always supportive of our pursuits and successes whether on the athletic field or in the classroom or workplace. June 6 has special significance to me since my own father took part in the D-Day invasion. As a 17-year-old sailor (yes, 17) he was a member of a Navy landing-craft crew that took US soldiers ashore during the initial assault on Omaha Beach, which from all accounts was a bloody and horrific encounter. As most of veterans of this era, my father didn’t speak much of his experiences during the war. They felt that they were just doing their duty and then returned home to start careers and families. Sadly, this generation often referred to as our greatest generation has nearly vanished. However, I take solace in that I was able to benefit from their influence and I’m always grateful for their bravery and sacrifice which preserved the freedoms we enjoy today. One of these freedoms to me is that I’m free to run almost anywhere in peace.

RUNNIN’ OFF AT THE MOUTH
“You know, I’m no women’s libber, but the media can really irritate me . I sure get tired of being ‘pert’ Francie Larrieu. That kind of stuff has to stop. All those ridiculous adjectives they use with women.” –Francie Larrieu
“A woman naturally thinks about how she looks and the marathon beats you up so much that you look terrible at the end. You do not happily go before the camera. You just primp yourself as best you can and tell yourself, well what can I do about it?” –Uta Pippig
“Joanie, if marathons make you look like this, please don’t run anymore.” –Joan Benoit’s mother in a letter to her daughter after seeing a picture on a newspaper

Running and Heat Acclimation – by OKhen
Mango Marjo (MM) and I met our Ambler Area Running Club (AARC) friends for a weekly track workout Thursday evening, 6/6, at Germantown Academy. Though many talked about the heat and humidity, MM and I were already acclimated as a result of our time spent in PR. So, while summer is just getting underway in PA, we have been dealing with heat since January. In fact, sadly, I get cold when the real temperature is in the low 70s. Interesting how we adapt.
That said, it may be a good time to properly prepare yourself for the summer. While prompted by me, the linked (full) article below is written with the assistance of ChatGPT.
Essential Strategies for Peak Performance in the Heat
Running is a highly demanding physical activity that tests endurance, strength, and mental fortitude. When coupled with the challenge of high temperatures, the demands on a runner’s body increase exponentially. Heat acclimation, the process of adapting to hot conditions, is crucial for runners looking to perform optimally and safely in warm environments. This article delves into the science behind heat acclimation and offers practical strategies for runners to adjust to the heat effectively.
Understanding Heat Acclimation…
Key Physiological Changes
- Enhanced Sweating…
- Increased Plasma Volume…
- Lower Core Temperature…
- Stabilized Heart Rate…
Strategies for Heat Acclimation…
- Gradual Exposure…
- Hydration…
- Clothing…
- Timing and Environment…
- Nutrition…
- Listen to Your Body…
Mental Acclimation…
Benefits of Heat Acclimation
- Improved Performance…
- Enhanced Safety…
- Greater Comfort…
Conclusion
Heat acclimation is an essential process for runners who train or compete in warm conditions. By gradually exposing themselves to heat, staying hydrated, wearing appropriate clothing, and listening to their bodies, runners can significantly improve their performance and safety…
