Zen Yanni Bench Celebration

Sunday, May 19, 2024 Thanks to overwhelming generosity, a memorial bench for John Van Allen (Zen Yanni) was installed at the start of Forbidden Drive earlier this year.  Now that the weather is nice, please join us on Sunday May 19 for the official “unveiling” of the bench and some bagels and coffee.   Open…

RUMINATIONS

By Kaycee

The Monday afternoon before Broad Street, I was doubled over with stomach pain & nausea. I’ll spare you the gory details, but I could do little more than lay on my bed trying to get comfortable and hoping I’d either die and the pain would end or that I might actually live to see another day.

By Tuesday afternoon, I had recovered and chalked the bug up to a 24-hour thing.  Thursday night I was crippled again with pain and discomfort, to the point I asked my husband Rich to take me to the ER.

They found that a kidney stone was causing the pain, but they thought the worst of it was over. If you have never had a kidney stone, consider yourself very lucky. Rich told the ER doctor about my plans to run Broad Street and the doctor said I should be okay unless I had any pain.

Sunday dawned bright and early and I was pain free, so I headed to the starting line with the other Blue Belles and AARC runners. As I started running, I knew that any chances of an amazing run were out of the question, as I still wasn’t feeling 100% back to normal. I enjoyed the run as best I could with the usual self-motivating pep talks that most runners give when they feel like giving up.

In 2014, before I ran my first Love Run, my pre-race jitters were driving me and my family crazy. My then 15-year-old son wrote “It doesn’t matter” on a sticky note and stuck it on my desk. I still have it and that became my mantra this year on Broad Street… In the end, it really doesn’t matter. I ran the race and was happy with my time. I was even happier that the stone hadn’t slain me!
