RUMINATIONS
By Kaycee
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to ski in Montana after an 18-year hiatus from the slopes. My sister, her husband & their 28-year-old son would join me and my hubby for a week of skiing. I bought new gear (jacket & bibs), and rented the equipment when we arrived.
I felt pretty spiffy in my red Spyder jacket and black Spyder bibs – I was certainly visible against the white snow. Our first day on the mountain coincided with my birthday, and I had a big smile on my face the entire day. Skiing with my closest sibling? Check. Surrounded by mountain beauty? Check. Remembering how to ski? Check!
Reality hit, though, when I realized that I was now 61, and not in my mid-20’s. My sister & I decided it was more important to make it back to the lifts in one piece, regardless of how long it took us to get there. While her hubby & mine bombed down the mountain, we made leisurely S turns, stopped along the way, and made the men wait at the bottom.
Our daily goal was to ski from “bell to bell,” meaning we wanted to ski to the lift when they opened at 9 AM, and make the last lift at 4 PM. One of the highlights of each day was stowing the equipment in the garage, peeling off the warm clothes, and deciding what to have for Happy Hour. My nephew took pictures and videos while we skied, and we would relive the day while we sat by the fireplace & enjoyed a cocktail or 2.
It reminded me of the runners who show up to run with Shawmont each week. Some are wearing brand new running clothes, while some are proud of their vintage race shirts & old shorts. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what you wear, how fast you run, or how far you go. We all end up back where we started, ready to talk about how much fun we had. And we can’t wait to do it again.
