Trailtagging II – by CtCloser

SRC trail tags (nicknames) have come to be in a bunch of different ways.

At least one came by negotiation, e.g., OKhen. Some came by self-selection, e.g., Cookie and Meatball. By far the most common way has been by translation of initials, e.g., Kaycee (AKA KC, Kristy) and Alan Bravo. Some runners simply brought their own, e.g., Half Caff, Just Gene, and Kell Pell.

Besides the feeling of belonging to SRC, trail tags provide the benefit of anonymity since not everyone wants their full names all over the web (with increasingly good reason). With the creation of the very public SRC website, it made sense to try to keep the use of full names to a minimum. Facebook did make things a little weird, which even Zen Yanni observed to me when I once asked him about it. In that case, though, people could choose to self-reveal, thus removing responsibility (read “culpability”) from the editors of this illustrious publication.

What about the whole trail-tag thing as 2 names (Just Gene) or 1 (LadyJen) on these very pages? That’s simply a matter of style and preference. The Zenster tended to contract. As an editor, this individual has been keeping tags as 2. But as with so many other practices, time will tell.

Finally, if you don’t have a trail tag yet, just wait. Consider Desi (“Another New Nickname”). You can find posts from her in this Facebook group as early 2013. Then in 2018…

RUNNIN’ OFF AT THE MOUTH

“I learned, one, you shouldn’t ever quit. And I learned, two, you’ll never be able to explain it to anybody.” –Jim Ryun

“Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they’ve got a second. Give your dreams all you’ve got and you’ll be amazed at the energy that comes out of you.” –William Jones

“When we run we are already so exposed, often nearly naked in our shorts and T- shirts, huffing and puffing, purified by the effort. Briefly removed from the defenses and secrets we maintain in so much of our lives, we feel less need to hide our private thoughts, loves, fears and stresses. We share.” –Amby Burfoot
