So Much to Say

[1½ MIN READ] All of a sudden, there’s so much to write about in this little feature of the ZY Memorial Newsletter. This past week alone, there was the New York Marathon, Adidas’ new Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1, and Jenny Hoffman’s still-unofficial record-smashing San-Fran-to-NYC run. On the SRC side, there’s the development of new trail profiles after the publication of the first (for that very ZY, Zen Yanni). And then there’s the stuff very near and very dear to my heart; the stuff that makes me go, hmm. So, I start with the hmm and work my way out, assuming nothing else comes up to interfere.

Like other SRC-ers, I run with at least one other member outside of the usual Saturday mornings. BB Betsy introduced me to the group after seeing me running up the street and by her house many times and returning significant lengths of time later. I will proudly claim credit for introducing her to a little 8 miler from our adjacent neighborhoods (think Glenside Gardens) over to Ardsley and North Hills. What’s appealing is that it’s a good medium-length run that tours 2 quiet neighborhoods with relatively few intersections with busy streets.

For a slightly longer distance, I managed to figure out how to add another mile for 9 total. Then, running solo recently, I managed to eke out even more mileage—3 more to be precise—turning an 8-mile run into a 12 miler. Although getting to those 2 quiet neighborhoods requires a 2-mile out-and-back effort, what makes them appealing is the ability to tour them internally without actually retracing any steps. Check out the image with the comparison of maps. The basic idea is that you can zig and zag practically ad nauseum and keep racking up the mileage.

Hmm, what about a 13 miler? Done. The last map is for a 13-mile effort, all in those 2 quiet neighborhoods with relatively few intersections with busy streets and no retracing.
