For 9/9/23

RUMINATIONS

In August, my husband was let go of his position at a tech company as part of a 20% staff reduction. It was completely unexpected and came the day after we bought a new car and a few days before our son’s tuition payment was due. To say we felt crushed, humbled and blindsided would be an understatement.

I kept the news to myself for a week or two, only telling one close friend and one of my 4 siblings. I can’t say for sure why, but maybe it’s because I didn’t want pity or empty condolences. Or maybe I was just embarrassed.

A few weeks later, I had plans to see 3 friends for dinner. We don’t get together often, but we have 20 years of shared history together.  As soon as I arrived, I blurted out, “My husband lost his job and it sucks.”  Friend X said, “I can’t afford to pay my mortgage due to the rising interest rates.”  Friend Y said, “I backed out of the garage and hit my husband’s car and now both need major repairs.  Friend Z said, “I have a health issue that I am scared to face.”

Suddenly, my problems seemed really insignificant.  It reminded me of the saying “If everyone threw their problems in a pile, you’d want your own back.”  My husband and I have savings that will keep us afloat and we have our health.

Fortunately, I have my running as my outlet when I need to burn off pent-up frustration or anxiety. I know that when I show up at a group run, there are plenty of people to help me focus more on what’s important and less on life’s distractions.
