RUMINATIONS

Telling Your Story

[1 MIN READ] For a number of years after he couldn’t get to the trail the way he wanted to, zen yanni gave the job of writing the Ruminations for each Run Report to some of us others who were willing to contribute. Run Anon did his share. I’ve done my own, as have OKhen and KayCee.

I’ve also invited other people to share some of their ruminations. The response has consistently been, Oh, I’m not a good writer. Then a new idea arose: Ask people to tell me a running story. I’ll make a go of telling of it, ALWAYS with permission. So thanks to Jimmy for okaying his about getting goosed. SRC-ers who run with me have already been saying for a while, Watch out, this is going to get into one of CtCloser’s Ruminations. Sometimes that’s true, sometimes it’s not. With this new strategy, I may well ask you pointedly for something to share.

Note, I will always share something you convey with your explicit permission. We know that running is really cheap therapy and the trail is an important place to confide with each other. This is one of the realities that zy thought was so amazing about SRC. Having someone blabbing indiscriminately about something intended for privacy would be a real downer, to say the least. With all that said, plan on saving up stuff to share, hey?

Thank you Just Gene for the follow up:

“My team struck a blow for septuagenarian pride this past weekend at the Hood To Coast Relay:”

  • 1,165 12-runner teams (it’s a BIG race)
  • The race starts on the slopes of Mt. Hood, runs through Portland, and ends at the coastal city of Seaside.
  • Each runner does 3 legs of the 200-mile race (approx 10k per leg)
  • My team consisted of 8 men and 4 women, all over the age of 70. Average age of 74.
  • Being the only 70+ team and having fewer than six women meant that we competed in the 60+ Open Division.
  • We finished first in that category! Finishing time of 29 hours, 33 minutes, 34.8 seconds, just 58 seconds ahead of 2nd place.
  • We finished 342nd overall, so we were in the top 30% of all teams.

WOW…Congratulations!

THANKS FOR EVERYONE SENDING IN YOUR RACE TIMES. WE DEFINITELY HAVE A VERY IMPRESSIVE RUNNING GROUP!!

RUNNIN’ OFF AT THE MOUTH

“Running isn’t simply a discipline. It can become like a compulsion – it can become like a god. If you worship this god, you forget everything else. And when you lose this god, you’ve got nothing.” –Alberto Salazar

“It takes a lot more than ability to run fast; it takes the ability to keep coming back and keep coming back.” –Ben Durden

“I run therefore I am. And given the years improved fit ness adds to our lives, if I did not run, maybe I would no longer be.” –Hal Higdon
