Shawmont Running Club began circa 1989 with a few folks that recognized each other from regular runs at Forbidden Drive in Fairmount Park’s Wissahickon Creek area. They found companionship in their runs together and common ground in the desire to use running as an emotional and physical outlet.
Those folks—Ellenita, Teddio, Waterbottle Dave, Weezinator, and Zen Yanni—began both gathering consistently and drawing others to themselves as they developed a pattern, a circuit, and an ethos.
The group kept going even when linchpin The Zenster no longer easily could. Zen Yanni passed into the great running beyond in April 2023 under untimely and unrelated circumstances. From those original 5, Teddio continues to carry the mantle along with a new group of maniacs. Weezinator, wife of The Zenster, with dog Missy in tow, makes occasional appearances.
