OCTOBER 21st – Bye week.  No group run.

ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28th, the start time will change to 8:00 AM.

Shawmont isn’t the only hill, ya know…but it is our hill. Hill work makes you strong and Shawmont is a big hill! It is so important to us that we have made a stop at the bottom and the top. Although we started stopping at the bottom to allow Teddio to relieve himself…not for any other reason.

So, what are some other hills that Shawmonters challenge themselves on? Here is my list:

  1. Rock the cradle- On this one, you start at the Inn and run up Wises Mill and down Wises Mill, then, you cross the parking lot and run up Springfield Ave and down. You can do 20 miles this way and lose your sanity. Seito founded this gem.

  1. Rittenhouse-Wissahickon- Instead of turning right at the end of the trail, turn left and run up Rittenhouse Street and then up Wissahickon. It is almost as long as Shawmont but there are two traffic lights that give you a chance to stop/stall. Milesman runs this hill most weekdays because he likes to stop.

  1. Manor Road. - Same vertical drop as Shawmont but it is gently rolling and is 1.6 miles (vs. 1 mile for Shawmont). It is so beautiful as long as you don’t get hit by a car.

  1. Harts Lane- Same vertical drop as Shawmont but it is straight up. Much shorter horizontal distance than Shawmont. Some runners say this it is the ultimate challenge. I think it’s stupid. If you need a challenge, swim in a pool which is almost as boring as rocking the cradle…Shawmont is enough.

So what are your favorite hills??

Even tho’ RCee did not consult with SRC’s Executive Committee concerning the move, we wish her well and will hold her to the pledge of return visits.

Good luck in Dutch Country, RCee!

** RUNNIN' OFF AT THE MOUTH

Slow is the new fast.

—Bill Katovsky, author and editor loping along in his early 50s

I believe you'll develop speed via strength work, which includes hill running, or running hilly courses, as the Kenyans do on a steady basis.

—Bill Rodgers

On those mornings when I was tempted to roll over and fall asleep again, I imagined my racing rivals leaping out of bed and roaring out the front door on a ten-mile workout. The thought so terrified me that I was generally lacing up my shoelaces within five minutes.

—Amby Burfoot
