Gift Edition:

The evolution of the runner’s headphone. This is a follow up to last week’s ditty on music devices. If you’re looking for that next gift…..

So, here it is. Headphones have gotten better and better, and uglier and uglier. For years, I ran with the yellow Sony over the hear ear phones. Sound was decent but cord was annoying and it only fell off when you got it tangled with your swinging arms. Then, when you put on a winter hat, it was too uncomfortable to run. Not perfect.

I’ve run in all kinds of wired headphones and, good or bad, they were always annoying.

Then Apple did it. They freed us runners. They took away the headphone jack, forcing a revolution in running headphones. In the last couple years, Beats, Jaybird, Bose and others have made some awesome headphones. Here is my take on my top three (that stay in my ear):

Beats- Work great with apple products (but not with Teddio’s Shuffle---dude, you’re dated!). Reliable and sweat resistant. If you like bass, it ain’t there. Great for podcasts.

Jaybird- Better sound and most reliably sweat proof. Can get good pricing on line. Great for podcasts, good for music. Downside is that you can’t hear cars coming so stay in the valley.

Bose- Overpriced but awesome for music. The sweat proof piece has always been a Bose issue for me. One pair I returned 5 times for warranty claims. All that said, check out the new Bose wireless Free. OMG. No wires at all, amazing sound, and only 250. Did I say amazing? (BTW. It will make you look dorky)  That will be your BIG holiday gift.

Happy listening

** NEWS ITEMS **

** ‘Ken With A K’ RESOLUTION **

The dilemma is over and there’s been no demand for a recount.  The runner formerly known as “Ken With A K” and, later, as “KenO” shall hence forth and hitherto be known as “OKhen.”  As it is written, so it shall be.

** RUNNIN' OFF AT THE MOUTH

When you're young and training two or three times a day, you can beat everybody your age, but you'll only last a few years.

—Arturo Barrios, of Mexico and former world-record holder of the 10,000 meters

I train for good luck.

—Arturo Barrios

Every so often, if you find your times slowing down, if you find your strength leaving you a little bit, don't try to push through it. Totally detrain.

—Priscilla Welch
