** RUMINATIONS

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Sometimes I feel like the Princess and the Pea when I run on the trail. Every little stone annoys me. I especially feel the large sharp stone. With the leaves down, I don’t know what I’m stepping on until it hurts. Broke my foot on a stone once.

But, my real annoyance is the stuff that gets in and on my shoe. The little pebbles begin to accumulate in my shoe from my first few steps. When I was young and had fat pads on my heel, I could tolerate it more. Now it gets increasingly annoying until I finally have to stop, take off my gloves, untie my shoes, dump the stones, put my shoe back on, tie them, put my gloves back on, and breathe a sigh of relief that my shoe didn’t fall out of my hand and roll down the hill into the creek.

Then, I start to run again, and I realize that the stones that were really bothering me were in my socks so….

Then, I get home and there are all these leaves stuck to my shoes and making the floor a mess.

An argument for barefoot running, except…

Your friend in running,

Anon

** RUNNIN' OFF AT THE MOUTH

When I see a videotape of the race, I think of how much fun it would have been to attend as a spectator… just to watch. Let alone be in it. Even watching a tape today, it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

—Dick Beardsley, on losing by two seconds in the 1982 Boston Marathon “Duel in the Sun” with Alberto Salazar

Beardsley: “You ran a hell of a race. Salazar: “You had me hurting.”

—Exchange between both just past the Boston finish line
