** RUMINATIONS

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

As I have aged, my running heroes have evolved. When I was young (and somewhat faster) my heroes were the likes of Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, Joan Benoit and Amby Burfoot (because he was a goofball that won Boston). Locally, we had Dave Patterson, Sandy Folzer (who was older than me but kept kicking my butt), and Gary Fannelli (another goofball who became a temporary American Samoan so he could run the Olympic marathon in ’88). Then, my heroes moved on to Uta Pippig, Alberto Salazar, and half of Kenya.

As I aged, some of the old farts started creeping into my list. Ed Whitlock joined my hero ranks. A Canadian, I think, who was the oldest person to run a sub-3 hour marathon at 69. Wow.

Now we have a new hero, and a local hero. If you haven’t heard, Just Gene just ran a 2:57 in Rotterdam. Age 70. World record! This beats Roger Bannister’s 4 minute mile! Ed Whitlock is Gene’s footnote.

I am honored to have run with you Gene!

Your friend in running,

Anon

** RUNNIN' OFF AT THE MOUTH

I use my running (and deliberately shun the word “training”) as the daily reset button. The harder and busier the day is the more I need to do an easy run. This relaxation counters the sometime toxic levels of stress that comes with being overextended as a family physician and other work commitments. If running were another stress it would not be sustainable, therefore all of my running is relaxed. Often people read schedules developed by elite athletes and they have weekly strenuous sessions. Now if you are an elite athlete and the rest of your day is the relaxing part then you can add frequent stressful workouts. For 99.9 percent of all runners this is not the case. We all have busy and stressful lives and the running must fit into the “yin” of the “yin and yang” circle.

—Mark Cucuzzella, M.D.
